By just keeping the flow of the song in your head you simply drop in those pieces into your DAW MIDI track and make them the appropriate length by cutting/copying and pasting to get the correct number of measures in any given section. But drums are the one thing where you MUST have an understanding of certain key music fundamentals such as BPM (Beats Per Minute), time signature (4/4, 3/4, 6/8, etc) and measures in order to effectively build a drum track.ĭrum tracks generally only need certain key things such as an Intro beat, Main beat for verses, sometimes alternative beats for the chorus or bridge, one measure fills or accents or transitions (to chorus or bridge etc.), and an ending or outro section. Most often I build my drum tracks before I do any recording of other instruments or vocals.
If you record your guitar to a click or you just pick a basic drum pattern to record over, you can swap in more interesting patterns when you're done and not have to re-record to the drum track. So real problem here is that if you don't follow the default song structure you would just shrink the section down to the correct amount of measures and then add a fill (or shrink it from the start to end on the default fill).Īlso he just snaps the stuff in and plays you maybe one bar of it, so you have no idea if it really puts together as nicely as it seems.Īll that said though, EZ Drummer really is this easy. I think most of the parts in the toontrack stuff are arranged in 8 measure segments, so if he stuck to that structure for each part of his song it's pretty simple to just snap things in.
